California: July 4, 2003

A continuation of the cross-country adventure I shared with Ben in the summer of 2003....

Day 27--Friday, July 4, 2003

Well, we finally actually made it into the water at La Jolla Cove, but we definitely found ourselves wishing that we hadn't!  Snorkeling in La Jolla was absolutely DISGUSTING!  The water was so thick with seaweed and all types of water vegetation that it wrapped our legs up firmly in it as soon as we waded in.  We spent the better part of a half hour trying to detangle ourselves from the wet weeds, get on the face mask, and maneuver to an area where we might actually be able to tread water free of grasping plants.  We never actually succeeded in this aim, since when we finally did find a somewhat clear area, our underwater views only showed us yet more plants a few inches below our toes.  Not exactly the gorgeous views we had hoped for.

After attemping to de-seaweed ourselves in bathrooms overflowing with Fourth of July picnickers, we began our long drive to Tucson, Arizona.
